Console Vault, what is this thing, and why do you need one? Those are great questions, please allow me to elaborate. Console Vault is an American owned and operated company specializing in small, portable safes for vehicle, as well as the home. The are coming up on 25 years in business next year, which is quite an accomplishment. Console Vault is based in Columbus, Ohio, right here in the good ol’ US of A. They utilize domestic sources for their manufacturing when possible but will also use high quality foreign suppliers if needed to supplement. Console Vault has about a dozen employees that make some of the best drop in vehicle vaults in the industry.
Over The Years
I’ve had the opportunity to test a few different variations of these types of vaults, as well as the cheaper ones that utilize a simple cable around the seat bracket for securing itself. The later aren’t bad, and even Console Vault offers one of these models themselves. If that is all you can afford, then that is a step up from not using anything at all. One should not be forced to leave their firearms in a vehicle in the first place, however, as we all know, a “gun-free zone” is nothing more than a target rich environment.
With that being said, if you need to lock up a heater in your ride, you want to be safe about it right? The cheaper ones that utilize a cable are alight, but a lot of thieves carry snips to clip these, especially if they are looking for a firearm. At least the ones I’ve arrested in the past did. This then negates your purpose as the would-be thief will just remove your safe with the firearm or valuables inside and crack it open elsewhere.

Console Vault Center Console Safe
Enter in, the Console Vault Center Console Safe. This thing is great, and it’s easy to install and use. Step 1: clean out and empty your center console. Step 2: remove the two bolts on the inside. Step 3: drop in the Console Vault itself and use the supplied screws and you’re done. It’s literally so simple, even a caveman can do it. That is going to stop 99% of thieves in their tracks. They might look elsewhere in your vehicle as once they spot the vault, it’s just not worth the hassle. But most likely the would-be thief will simply move on to some other easier victim.
Console Vault offers five different locking systems to choose from. You can opt for a simple barrel type key lock, a 3 or 4 digit combination lock, an Elite 4 digit lock, or what I picked up, the elite electronic lock. Theres something for everyone at all different price points, starting at $319 for my “Yota” vehicle.

And if you ever decide to part with your ride, you can easily remove the Console Vault Car Safe by reversing the three steps above. It’s really a very simple procedure. The Elite Electronic Lock that I selected is really cool. There is an external female plug end built into the side of the lid. Plug it into one of your power jacks in the front for a quick charge. There are three lights on the front, blue (password changes/low battery light), green (for charging complete) and red (improper password). If non-electronic is your preference, I’d highly recommend their Elite 4 Digit Lock version.
Console Vault Construction
All Console Vault Console Safes are made using heavy gauge, cold-rolled plate steel with welded tabs and notch seams. There are absolutely zero modifications to your vehicle required, as this is non-permanent. The locks are drill resistant and the product is backed by Console Vaults lifetime warranty. This product is bar none, the best bang for your buck as far as security and peace of mind are concerned. Add in Console Vault’s exceptional level of customer service, and you’ve got yourself a great product.
I’m all about responsibility and securing my valuables, but in this day and age, crime is running rampant in certain areas of the country. This is a proven fact as our automobile insurance costs have skyrocketed due to people not having insurance and still driving, as well as the enormous rise in vehicle break-ins (car prowls) all over the nation, and especially here in Washington State.

According to a news article on 23 April 25 from Fox News Seattle, Washington State was ranked most at-risk state for car break-ins. There are 47.10 car break-ins per 100k people. To add to that, this state is so rabid anti-gun that new “laws” were put in place here. If a turd breaks into your vehicle and steals your firearm (even if they clip your “security cable”) and ultimately gain control of your firearm and use it in the commission of a crime, you as the registered owner can and most likely will catch a criminal charge. Isn’t that something?
Peace Of Mind
Why car dealerships are not offering these as an add on for new and used vehicle purchases is beyond me. I’m no economics or business major, but rolling a $319 peace of mind into the cost of your vehicle isn’t much of a cost overrun for most people. And like mentioned earlier, you can take it out and sell, gift it, or reuse it if you get the same but newer model of vehicle, so WIN/WIN for everyone!

I personally plan on purchasing these as gifts for my adult children as they are both responsibly packing heat. It’s a small investment to keep your valuables or firearm(s) safe when needed. Also of worthy note, unless a LE Agency has probable cause to believe that your in-vehicle safe contains evidence of a crime, they will most likely need to obtain a warrant to open it. It’s great protection all the way around for everyone!
Bottom Line, if you are looking for some peace of mind in keeping your valuables or pistols safe in a motor vehicle, check out Console Vault and their whole list of available products.
