It has been said, “Necessity is the mother of invention”, no trade or aspect is immune. For example, in 2020 when an elderly neighbor of Neil Oakshott, was packing her late husband’sclothing into a drawer of sweaters, she discovered a handgun. She had not known of the handgun’s existence and had never handled a handgun before. Unfortunately, while she tried to secure the handgun, she shot herself in the foot.
How Spartan Guardian Was Born
This event with his neighbor led Oakshott down a rabbit hole of investigating gun safety storage systems. Oakshott was appalled at how poorly this market was being served. He set out to design a better gun safe.
Once he had developed several concepts, he approached his business partner, Rob Johnson, who had a lifetime of experience handling firearms. After he looked over Oakshott’s concepts and did some of his own research, the two decided the portable gun safe market was lacking at best. They set out to create a better product. They felt the safe should be easily transportable between your home and vehicle, work and back and forth. After two years of proto-types, the Spartan Guardian was born.

When they introduced the Spartan Guardian at the 2024 SHOT, they had hoped for some positive feedback.
“We talked to industry leaders, police departments both domestically and internationally. And we thought if we received a solid 7 on a scale of 1-10, we’d take it to market. But we received a 14! We were blown away,” said Johnson.
Demand was incredible.

Cranking Out Production
In April 2025, production began. In a world of keys, combination and biometric locks, Johnson and Oakshott decided to go a different route. While researching they partnered with a university in the Netherlands to conduct human behavior studies utilizing both biometrics (fingerprints or thumbprints) and keypads which dominate the gun safe market. The studies showed under stress both biometric and keypads have unacceptable fail rates. According to Johnson not only does sweat affect the scan of your fingerprints but in the past two years more than 120,000 safes have been recalled. The sensitivity of the biometric scan had to be turned down which caused it to open when it shouldn’t. Keypad failure under stress is also miserably high. Under stress the chances of someone remembering even the simplest codes are very low. If the first attempt fails, then any subsequent tries reduce the chances to zero.

RFID Magic
Johnson and Oakshott chose to use RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) for their safes. “No matter what stressful situation you are in, our safe is going to pop open when needed giving instant access to your firearm,” said Johnson.

The patented Spartan Guardian utilizes a key fob, a card or a wearable like a ring or a wristband. This prevents access to the firearm and ammunition as the entire handgun is locked until it is needed. It also has a hidden pocket for cash keys or a tracking device like the AirTag or Tile Pro.If someone rips the safe from your automobile or off the wall, the safe can be tracked using a cell phone or nearby Internet connection.

In the event the RFID fails, the Spartan Guardian has a backup manual lock. “This lock is both pick proof and drill proof. The locks were originally designed for the cash drawers in Las Vegas and have been modified for the Spartan,” said Johnson.

Mount Anywhere
“We designed mounting systems for numerous applications from curved surface mounts to flatsurface mounts,” said Johnson.
Additional mounts are in the works for ATVs, side by sides, RVs and motorcycles. The SpartanGuardian plugs into a standard 110 outlet and a car charger adapter to charge the unit. It also comes equipped with a rechargeable battery pack and can withstand not being recharged for months without electricity to the unit.

Currently, the Spartan Guardian only fits medium frame semi-autos, but other models are being developed to accommodate handguns with optics, flashlights and large frame semi-autos as well as models to fit revolvers.
If you are looking at a top-quality home safe system made in the US to keep your family safe but still have easy access to your handgun even under stress, look at the Spartan Guardian.
